Portland, OR

I was so fortunate to be able to meet some of my fellow co-creators in Cat Coquillette’s Art of Collections class. We all travelled to Portland from the far reaches of Oregon and Washington, and hung out for a whole weekend talking licensing, art, life—it was such a joyous breath of air.

One of our first outings was to Portland’s Art Museum, where we saw—amongst the usual holdings—a mini Rick Bartow collection, and also one from David Hockney. Hockney’s was kind of quaint, in that it featured printed versions of his iPhone sketches—something that nowadays seems so common (for a really great collection of spur-of-the-moment art, see Marie Gagnon’s subway sketches.) But of course Hockney’s subject matter and style were the main attraction.

We started out the day by agreeing to try and gather photos of color as a little art exercise, and it was amazing how it sharpened my eye! I picked yellow because I happened to be wearing a yellow t-shirt, and just couldn’t help myself all through the day seeing yellow everywhere—on the streets, in shops, and throughout the museum.

All in all, a really beautiful weekend filled with laughter. I can’t wait to do it again.
